Canon U.S.A. Inc., the Year 2000 U.S. market share leader for PC Copiers, today announced the upcoming availability of its first two digital personal copiers, the PC1080F and the PC1060.

Scheduled to begin shipping during the fourth quarter of this year, the PC1080F and PC1060 represent examples of Canon's promise to expand its competitively priced digital products into the Small Office/Home Office (SOHO) market through national retailers. The Canon PC1060 has an estimated street price of $699 while the Canon PC1080F is expected to sell for $799.

"The PC1080F and the PC1060 present Canon with an exciting opportunity to capture a large share of the digital PC copier market," said James Rosetta, vice president and general manager, Retailer/Distributor Sales Division for Canon U.S.A.'s Imaging Systems Group. "Canon is the company that invented PC Copiers and our move to state-of-the art digital technology demonstrates our commitment to our SOHO customers. While other major brands have moved out of this market segment, Canon sees its PC1080F and PC1060 as just the first in what we expect to be a robust, competitive line of digital products for SOHO users," Rosetta added.

The Canon PC1080F and PC1060 incorporate proven Canon technology and new features that will help enhance SOHO customers' productivity. Employing Canon's exclusive Single Cartridge System, which contains the drum, development unit and toner in one easily replaceable cartridge, and digital laser copying technology, the PC1080F and PC1060 provide quality black and white output of up to 1200x600 dpi at an economical $.03 per copy. Both devices can accept originals up to legal size and reproduce letter-size documents at 13 copies-per-minute (cpm) and legal-size documents at 10 cpm. Digital technology, through the touch of a single button, facilitates collating of multi-page documents.

The two copiers also feature an efficient 30-sheet automatic document feeder, a 500-sheet front-loading paper cassette and a 100-sheet multi-purpose tray that accepts a variety of media including bond, plain and colored paper, transparencies, labels and envelopes.

The Canon PC1080F includes G3 fax capability, allowing users to transmit documents at modem speeds as high as 14400 bps -- approximately 6 seconds-per-page. The PC1080F allows two types of faxing: through the automatic document feeder or directly from the platen for books, magazines or non-standard size documents. Canon's newest PC Copier also features one-touch automatic dialing with speed dialing (12 destinations), group dialing (111 destinations) and automatic redialing.

The PC1080F and PC1060 use the Canon L50 cartridge which yields approximately 5,000 copies at 5% print density. A full Canon L50 cartridge is shipped with each copier. Canon provides a three-year limited warranty on the PC1080F/PC1060 with first year-on-site service.

The Canon PC1080F and PC1060 also include other award-winning attributes that enabled Canon PC Copiers to capture 51% (a) of the market for all analog and digital PC Copiers during the year 2000. The most well-known is Canon's patented RAPID Fusing System, which provides instant warm-up and eliminates waiting time. Coupled with the energy-saving automatic power-down feature, the Canon PC1080F and PC1060 both meet the ENERGY STAR guidelines set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Developed in 1993, the ENERGY STAR program promotes the manufacture of energy-efficient office equipment. Its designation applies to products that contribute to the reduction of pollution and emissions from power generated at electric utilities. Canon, a long-time ENERGY STAR partner and one of the leading producers of energy-efficient equipment, assists the EPA in developing guidelines to reduce global warming and is a strong advocate of consumer education through its product labeling and environmental programs.

Canon U.S.A., Inc., is an industry leader in professional and consumer imaging solutions and, through its parent company, Canon Inc. (NYSE: CAJ), is a top patent-holder of imaging technologies. The company's comprehensive product line includes networked multifunction devices; digital and analog copiers (color and black and white); printers; scanners, image filing systems, and facsimile machines; camcorders, cameras and lenses; and semiconductor, broadcast and medical equipment.
