Cancer op for Summer Wine star.

ACTOR Bill Owen, Compo in television's Last of the Summer Wine, was today reported to be seriously ill with stomach and bowel cancer.

The 85-year-old actor was described as ''very poorly'' following surgery at a private north London hospital to remove tumours.

He was taken ill in France last month where he and the rest of the BBC1 drama's cast were filming a millennium special.

Despite being extremely unwell, Mr Owen insisted on finishing the show. However, a 22nd series of Last of the Summer Wine is now in doubt.

One series insider told the Daily Mail: ''When he wasn't filming, he would sit quietly with his head in his hands.

''But as soon as he was on camera the change was miraculous. He was the same old Compo, full of fun and life.
