Cancer mortality statistics by state and county available.
The State Cancer Control Map and Data Program information database helps target early cancer detection and cancer prevention efforts to those populations with the greatest need.
Mortality rates for each county are calculated using the mortality (numerator) and population (denominator) datafiles. The resulting rates are then compared to national rates, and tested for significance. Counties are color-coded according to the extent by which county rates differ from national averages for the same parameters.
Individual counties can be identified on the computer screen by simple cursor movements. When the county is identified, the county's age adjusted mortality rate is provided at the top of the screen along with the number of deaths and the standard error. Similar state and national data is presented for comparison. Detailed data can be printed or exported to disk.
Professional organizations, public health departments, state and local cancer control, states and counties with elevated rates of lung cancer, and local media are obvious users of this program.
The State Cancer Control Map and Data Program can encourage public awareness of lung cancer mortality and the importance of smoking cessation; show that mortality from cancer is a local issue; increase public awareness of cancer; encourage early detection by physicians and health providers; document state and county mortality patterns in state medical and public health journals; set local cancer control goals, and measure progress in mortality reduction.
