Cancer experts to research chemical.

SCIENTISTS will research the effect of a banned chemical which causes cancer on the 'guardian angel' gene.

Aristolochic acid was banned from herbal supplements and weight loss remedies after it was found to cause cancer.

But now the charity the Association for International Cancer Research has awarded a grant for research to be carried out to see how it damages the P53 gene - the guardian angel gene - which can block the formation of tumours.

The research will be carried by Professor Dave Phillips, at the Institute of Cancer Research, and will look at the damage to the P53 gene in kidney and bladder cancers.

It is hoped the work will identify exactly how aristolochic acid causes cells to become cancerous.
