Canadian baritone Elliot Madore, winner of the 2010.

Canadian baritone Elliot Madore, winner of the 2010 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, was awarded the ARIAS Emerging Young Artist Award at a concert at the University of Torontos Walter Hall Dec. 9. The award was announced at the 2010 Opera Canada Awards last October (see p 32), though Madore, currently a member of the Metropolitan Opera's Lin-demann Young Artist Program, was unable to attend because he was rehearsing Puccini's Schaunard with Opera Colorado. ARIAS: Canadian Opera Student Development Fund (formerly Canadian Opera Volunteer Committee) has awarded more than 900 scholarships to young artists across Canada over its 63-year history. The goal of the organization, says ARIAS chair Arija Stiver, is "to ensure that Canada continues to be recognized as a major presence on the opera stages of the world."
