Project Location: Edmonton, AB Canada
Project Status: Active
Project Phase: Awarded (Supplier)
Facility Type:Bitumen Refinery
GE will supply motors to power the Sturgeon Refinery, first clean bitumen refinery to process tarry bitumen crude from the Alberta oil sands into diesel fuel.
Construction began on the plant, located near Edmonton, earlier this year. The project is a joint venture between North West Upgrading and Canadian Natural Resources. The 150,000-barrels-per-day bitumen refinery will be the first to incorporate an integrated CO2 management system, GE said in a statement.
Reciprocating compressors are used to process the bitumen, a sludgy material that flows far less easily than oil. GE s Series 9000-RCM motors will be used to power the compressors.
The Sturgeon Refinery is being built in three phases. According to North West Upgrading, the first 50,000-barrels-per-day phase has a cost estimate of US$5.7 billion and is expected to take approximately three years to build.
