Canada : PCL Invests in Future Engineers at the 2015 Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race.

PCL Construction is pleased to be the title sponsor of the 2015 Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race (GNCTR), currently being hosted by the School of Engineering at the British Columbia Okanagan Campus in Kelowna.

This is the 41st occurrence of the annual event, which challenges teams of engineering students from educational institutions across Canada to design, construct, and race a toboggan with concrete running surfaces. Among other guidelines, each creation must weigh less than 300 pounds, hold five passengers, and, most importantly, be safe.

As part of today s technical exhibition, industry judges evaluate entries based on design, technical presentation, construction, and concrete mix. Ultimately, race-day points will be awarded for fastest race time, team spirit, and overall best team.

Mitch Soetaert, PCL Melloy Turnaround & Maintenance Manager and returning guest safety judge, says, Teams are required to show the same skill and quality that PCL Construction looks for in the field: total teamwork during the design, construction, and testing of a successful project performed safely. Soetaert adds, After witnessing last year s creativity and talent, I m looking forward to once again seeing the ingenuity they apply to building and racing these toboggans, with safety and camaraderie being at the forefront of the experience.

PCL fills more than 500 student placements across Canada annually. The 2015 GNCTR sponsorship allows our companies to connect with future engineers for co-op and permanent positions in our buildings, industrial, and civil infrastructure operations. As a further example of our commitment to engineering schools, PCL is proud to sponsor the involvement of two individual teams: one from the University of Calgary and the other from the University of Waterloo.

Last year, the competition was attended by more than 450 students from 21 colleges and universities across North America. The four-day event wraps up Saturday with a race day at the Big White Ski Resort, followed by closing ceremonies at the Delta Grand Okanagan Hotel.
