Campaign Shows How to be a 'Good Egg".
To address shoppers" increasing interest in where their food originates, U.S. egg farmers and the American Egg Board (AEB) have launched the "Good Egg Project," an initiative with the goals of educating consumers about modern egg farming, introducing them to the farmers who supply the eggs and encouraging people "to eat well and do good every day."That encouragement includes asking consumers to join the fight against hunger by taking the Good Egg Project pledge on GoodEggProject.org. For every pledge taken, the farmers will donate one egg to Feeding America, the nation"s largest hunger relief charity, up to 1 million eggs."One in eight Americans go hungry in this country, so our food banks are under enormous stress to provide nutritious meals to feed families in need," explained Bill McGowan, COO of Chicago-based Feeding America (formerly America"s Second Harvest). "Over the last two years, America"s egg farmers have donated more than 20 million eggs, allowing us to provide high-quality protein foods to our food bank network. We hope Americans will join them in the fight against hunger and pledge their support online and throughout their communities."Also as part of the "Good Egg Project," America"s egg farmers will sponsor landmark children"s educational TV series "Sesame Street," which will begin its 40th season Nov. 10."The show has been teaching parents and kids about the world around them and the value of community for 40 years," noted Jacques Klempf, egg farmer and chairman of the Park Ridge, Ill.-based AEB. "Education is a key component of the Good Egg Project, and through this initiative we hope to share with kids and adults the story of an egg"s journey from farm to table and encourage them to become 'good eggs" in their communities."
