Camouflage and clothing.

WEATHER-WISE, WATER - FOWLING CAN be nasty business--or at least we hope it is. When the snow and rain flies, when wind produces whitecaps and cuts like a knife, and when temperatures plummet, ducks and geese can prove nearly suicidal.

Layers of heavily insulated clothing keep us warm on the most blustery days, but waterfowl hunters also need midweight duds for the slightly chilly days especially common in southern latitudes, and even those downright warm days during early seasons for teal and Canada geese, or during spring snow-goose forays.

The biggest names in the outdoor garment industry make comfort easy for duck and goose hunters. Choose from waterproof, insulated foul-weather gear to keep precipitation, wind and cold at bay, or snug base layers for warm days when moisture management means wicking away sweat instead of keeping the elements out. Even the classic wader has been modernized: Although thicker neoprene styles certainly retain a place in any waterfowling arsenal, lighter, breathable models keep you comfortable when the sun shines and temperatures climb.

These days, it's easy to remain comfortable while duck or goose hunting. The following is only a sampling of the attire available to make that happen.

REALTREE A culmination of Bill Jordan's many years of experience designing and marketing camouflage patterns, Realtree Max-4 is a pattern that offers maximum effectiveness in open terrain and in your favorite duck marsh. The pattern incorporates realistic, layered elements of cattails, millet, milo, corn stalks, sunflowers, oak and maple leaves, cedar and oak limbs, plus a variety of other plant life into the largest camouflage artwork in the hunting industry.

The latest camouflage offering, Realtree AP, a.k.a. All-Purpose, has all the details to make it effective, whether you're hunting riparian bottoms, flooded timber or from a field blind. The pattern's coloration and layout is neutral, open, high-contrast and realistic. AP was designed to take into account the effects that Mother Nature and the washing machine would have over time, holding its contrast even when worn hard.

CAMO UNLIMITED CamoSystems netting offers three-dimensional coverage for any waterfowling need. The netting realistically imitates life-like foliage, standing up to rough environments via UV treatment waterproof polyurethane coating and rot/mold-resistant formulas. CamoSystems uses reversible, shine-free colors that are lightweight and durable, remaining rustle-free and pliable in temperatures from minus 40 to 140 degrees. New for 2011, the nets are offered in the Flyway pattern.

AVERY OUTDOORS has created three waterfowl-hunting specific camouflage patterns. KW-1 was developed to hide ground blinds in harvested fields, but also blends well in light-colored terrain and wetland vegetation. Marsh Grass is patterned to resemble narrow-leaf cattails, because those plants share a common leaf size with phragmites, tules and flooded corn.

BuckBrush was designed from a duck's view in the air, using a combination of blurred and in-focus brush over a slightly darker background to give it a neutral-tone, woodland look. All three patterns can be found over the breadth of Avery waterfowl hunting products, from field blinds to gun cases to blind bags, in addition, waders, fleece jackets and pants, midweight shirts and pants and layering fleece are offered in Avery camouflage patterns.

MOSSY OAK camouflage is designed for waterfowl hunting. Duck Blind includes digitally reproduced images to keep you covered in virtually any setting across North America's flyways. It blends especially well when observed from a bird's-eye view, and is as effective in the cornfield as it is in flooded timber. The pattern includes a base of true dirt colors, two-toned to represent wet and dry ground, featuring layered elements of millet wild oats and corn stalks. Phragmites, Johnson grass, soybeans and native grasses add to the 3-D effect.

Break-Up infinity uses six individual layers of depth for realistic detail and sharper definition that effectively shatter your outline in flooded timber and field-hunt settings. The latest evolution of the Break-Up pattern uses advanced digital technology to create more depth and vision-confusing contrast combined with perfect realism. Break-Up Infinity is available from more than 100 Mossy Oak licensees on apparel, hunting accessories, firearms and more.
