Cambodian movie actress dies a week after gun attack.

PHNOM PENH, July 13 Kyodo

Cambodian movie actress Piseth Pilika died at a Phnom Penh hospital Tuesday following last week's gun attack against her and her 7-year-old niece while shopping.

We worked hard to help her, but in the end we could not do it because of serious wounds to her backbone, said Heng Taikry, director of the Calmette Hospital.

Piseth Pilika, 34, was shot three times last Tuesday while shopping at a market in the capital. Her niece was hit in the right shoulder during the attack by two still-unidentified assailants.

Ek Kret, the city's deputy police chief, said the investigation was still going on. Last week, the police said the attack could be linked to a lover's quarrel.

Piseth Pilika starred in a series of films produced by King Norodom Sihanouk and was a dance instructor at the Royal University of Fine Arts, as well as performing as a singer.
