Cambodia,Thailand : THAILAND with CAMBODIA to rebuild the railway bridge between KHLONG LEUK & POI PET.
In a bid to bring connection between the economies of Thai and Cambodian borders once again, Thailand's Transport Ministry will join hands with the Public Works and Air Transport Ministry of Cambodia to accomplish the foundation stone laying ritual to redevelop the Khlong Leuk-Poi Pet railway bridge.
Together with the Public Works Transport Deputy Minister of Cambodia - Guang Sun, the Transport Permanent Secretary of Thailand - Soithip Trisuddhi had presided over the ritual to place foundation stone for the restoration of the historic rail bridge between Khlong Leuk and Poi Pet. The new bridge will be developed on the foundation of the earlier one, located at the back of the Poi Pet Immigration Office in the Banteay Meanchey Province of Cambodia.
The bridge, which was constructed during the time of King Rama VII, used to facilitate movements of both people and goods involving the two neighboring states. But it remains idle for the past four decades.
Since the start of civil war in Cambodia in the early 1970s, all operations on the Khlong Leuk-Poi Pet rail bridge came to an end and rail services were suspended too.
Following this, trains running from Bangkok do not go beyond the Aranyaprathet station, 6-km from the said rail bridge.
However, the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) later on made a Bt2.808 billion allocation to maintain and restore train stations between Chacheongsao province and historic rail bridge in Aranyaprathet province.
Subsequently the contract to redevelop the whole project involving train stations and the rail bridge was awarded to the Italian-Thai Development Plc.
The Transport Ministry is optimistic that logistics and tourism activities between the two countries will see significant enhancement upon accomplishment of the complete project. Moreover, the revamped rail bridge will also facilitate reduction in clogging all the way through the Klong Leuk border.
