Calls to the council should be local rate; VOICE OF THE NORTH.

YOUR article again highlights the lack of common sense demonstrated by Northumberland County Council's Liberal Democrat administration and the Tories with regard to serving the most vulnerable members of the community (The Journal, April 28).

How can they justify making people in some cases pay 20p per minute to ring their own council? We already pay council tax, so why can't we have a local rate number. I am so pleased Bob Watson highlights these issues to the general public.

I worry the elderly will not ring such a number on a rate that is just appalling. These people should feel able to contact their local authority without worrying about the cost.

Come on Libs and Tories, get this number sorted out and charge people local rates only.

Northumberland people deserve better than this.
