Callister sets the gold standard to bag surprise win; CYCLING.

DEAN CALLISTER recorded a massive personal best to claim victory in the Coaching Revolutions Shropshire Championship 10.

The Nova Raider caused a huge upset to take The Gordon Davies Trophy and County 10 mile gold in round 11 of the Friction Hydraulics Series.

Callister coped best with sopping wet conditions on his first sight of the Brimfield-Ludlow bypass course to win in 20 minutes 26 seconds.

That time was a brilliant 1:07 improvement on his previous best as he took full advantage of a course known for personal bests, with two-thirds of the field also lowering their PBs.

Callister wasn't finished there as he led his club to Team 10 Gold and back to the top of the Top Club standings on what turned out to be a vintage day for the Newport squad.

"It was my first time on the course and I loved it," said Callister.

"Conditions were wet when racing but the course was still fast. I was very pleased with my ride.

"It was a great day for all the Nova Raiders team, taking gold in overall, women's, veterans' and team."

Callister was backed up in that team victory by strong rides from Dean Dovey and Ed Middleton, helping the club to a 2:07 winning margin over Ludlow Brewery RT in a combined 1:03:49.

Dovey shaved 39 seconds off his benchmark to take fifth overall in 21:40 with Middleton just one place and three seconds behind.

Dovey was also gaining his first sight of the course and took to it like a duck to water - which was helpful given his experience at the start when the heavens opened.

Dovey's involvement in the medals wasn't finished there as he tied for third spot in the Veterans' 10 Championship with Ludlow Brewery rider Steve Minton, with both posting a good standard time of +5:27.

While Callister and his team-mates were thrilled, the silver and bronze medallists weren't so happy - but for quite different reasons.

Taking the runner-up spot in 20:33, Wrekinsport's Chris Halford knew he was on a good ride but a hold-up about a mile from the finish cost him that vital eight seconds.

In-form Halford was left rueing what might have been. "I was gutted, I got held up just before the Sbends and bridge, and at my age I don't think I'll go that well again," he said.

Halford also took the same medal in the Veter-ans' Championship as he finished with an impressive standard of +6:03.

After winning all three previous rounds he had entered, defending champion Kirk Vickers had, by his high standards, a rare off day, taking the bronze medal in 20:40.

There's no stopping Nova's Deb Hutson-Lumb as she repeated the feat from the Cyclotherapy Shropshire Championship 25 to bag an impressive brace.

Hutson-Lumb beat Halford by five seconds on standard (+6:08) and also captured The Gordon Davis Women's Trophy thanks to a personal best 23:19 effort, chopping 19 seconds off her benchmark time.

Hutson-Lumb wasn't the only female medallist to go home with a big PB as Alison Dockney claimed silver with a superb 24:16.

Another Nova Raider, Jenny Newton, took Women's 10 bronze in 25:02.
