Call to keep young away from violence.

RIGHTS activists launched a social media campaign yesterday to emphasise the need for responsible parenting so that children do not get caught up in violent street protests.

The "You Are Responsible" initiative had been designed by the joint Bahrain Human Rights Group (BHRG) body and is accompanied by the slogan "Molotovs aren't toys".

"Announcements have been made about February 14, with calls for protests and violence - and as always, those behind these illegal activities will put children at the forefront," BHRG general co-ordinator Faisal Fulad told the GDN.

"As a rights group, we believe that we have to prevent this and the "You Are Responsible" campaign reminds everyone of their responsibility towards the future generation, our children.

"The campaign posters act as a warning to clerics, religious scholars, political leaders, parents, elders and officials, that they are responsible for using children for illegal activities.

"By allowing them to join rallies and protests, when they should be in schools, these people are violating international regulations on children's rights."

Mr Fulad stressed the need for young children to be kept away from violence in all its forms.

"These days, we see children as young as 10 at the forefront of protests and these children are like ticking bombs," he said.

"Our posters will be circulated online throughout the weekend and the BHRG will be monitoring activities on the ground as well.

"We will record all incidences of protests that involve children and fight for those behind these illegal protests to be legally punished."

The BHRG is a joint body consisting of members of the Bahrain Human Rights Watch Society, Bahrain Jurists' Society, Al Karama Society and the Bahrain Free Labour Union Federation (Al Hurr).
