Call to ensure proper measurement of commodities.
News Report World Metrology Day, commemorating the anniversary of signature by representatives of 17 nations of the 'Metre Convention-1875?, will be observed today (Monday) in Bangladesh as elsewhere across the world.
The event was held in Paris on 20 May celebrating the International System of Units (ISU).
The World Metrology Day project is currently realised jointly by the International Bureau of Weights Measurements (BIPM) and the International Organisation of Legal Metrology (OIML).
The theme of the World Metrology Day 2019 is 'The International System of Units Fundamentally Better'. President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday issued separate message wishing the success of all programmes on the occasion.
The President, in his message, said the celebration of the World Metrology Day can play a very significant role to create mass-awareness for ensuring proper measurement and weight.
The head of the state stressed the importance of proper measurement at all levels, including the flourishing industries, international trade, new technological invention and their proper uses.
'It's very urgent to ensure the proper measurement of commodities and maintain products' quality to strengthen Bangladesh's position in the field of world trade and commerce,' President Hamid said. Noting that the role of the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) and other concerned institutions is gradually on the rise, he hoped that the BSTI would continue its activities from production to marketing of any product by maintaining the world standard. In her message, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina termed the slogan of this year, 'The International System of Units Fundamentally Better' a time-befitting one for the developing countries and the developed others as well. She highlighted the importance of metrology, the science of measurement, in scientific inventions, newer discoveries and international trade and commerce.
The head of the government hoped that the metrology department of BSTI would carry out more research works regarding this to rebuild a developed, happy and prosperous Bangladesh. Metrology, the science of measurement, plays a central role in scientific discovery and innovation, industrial manufacturing and international trade, in improving the quality of life and in protecting the global environment.
The Metre Convention-1875 set the framework for global collaboration in the science of measurement and in its industrial, commercial and societal application.
The original aim of the Metre Convention - the worldwide uniformity of measurement - remains as important today as it was in 1875. To mark the day, BSTI has chalked out different programmes, including discussions, at its headquarters and regional offices. Bangladesh Television and Bangladesh Betar will broadcast special discussions to mark the day.
The key points and street islands in the capital city will be decorated with banners, festoons and placards.
