Call to ban ID cop cam.

POLICE face recognition cameras should be banned as a threat to freedom, says human rights group Liberty.

The hi-tech surveillance was highlighted when a man was fined PS90 for "disorderly behaviour" after covering his face walking past one such camera in London.

Liberty director Martha Spurrier said: "I don't think these cameras should ever be used. It is one of, if not the, greatest threats to individual freedom... far above and beyond what we already have, such as CCTV and stop and search."

Face recognition software matches faces caught on camera with a "watch list" of wanted offenders.

If a match is found, nearby police are alerted and decide whether to step in.
