California Governor expands carpool permits for hybrids.

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger last week signed a bill to make available 10,000 more carpool-lane permit stickers for drivers of certain hybrid vehicles. The new bill increases the sticker availability from 75,000 to 85,000.

The first-come, first-serve stickers were first released in 2005, and more than 72,000 have been claimed.

Eligible vehicles include the 2000 to 2004 Honda Insight, the 2004 to 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid and the 2001 to 2007 Toyota Prius, according to California Department of Motor Vehicles Director of Communications Mike Marando.

The governor signed the bill to encourage use of hybrid vehicles to help the environment, spokeswoman Sabrina Lockhart said.
