Calgenex Introduces Natural Solution for Managing Cholesterol and Triglycerides; Omeganol is First Omega 3-Tocotrienol Combination Supplement.

TAMPA, Fla. -- Calgenex Corporation today announced the introduction of Omeganol(TM), the first natural product for both cholesterol and triglyceride management, combining high-concentration omega-3 fish oils and tocotrienol-rich fractions from palm fruit and the annatto flower.

About 30% of American adults -- or 100 million people -- have total cholesterol levels above 200 mg/mL, which is considered high risk. It's estimated that as many as 47 million Americans have elevated triglycerides. High cholesterol is considered an independent risk factor for heart disease. High triglycerides are suspected to be one as well.

Omeganol is the first dietary supplement to combine the triglyceride-lowering properties of omega-3 fatty acids (essential fats found in oily, cold-water fish such as sardines and mackerel) with the cholesterol-balancing activity of tocotrienols (members of the vitamin E family that naturally occur in palm fruit and annatto flower).

"Most supplements on the market either target cholesterol or triglycerides -- which means they only supply one piece of the heart health puzzle," stated Joe Jacobs, M.D., consulting medical director for Calgenex and former director of the Office of Alternative Medicine at the National Institutes of Health. "This is a truly unique product that combines the best of the earth and the sea for heart health. Omeganol represents a safe, natural alternative for managing cholesterol and triglycerides."

Omega-3 fatty acids have been scientifically proven to lower triglycerides. In fact, a 1997 review study -- which looked at the results of 65 human clinical trials on fish oil supplementation -- concluded that about 3 grams a day of EPA + DHA reduced triglyceride levels 25-35%. The evidence is so strong that in 2002, the American Heart Association officially endorsed omega-3s (specifically EPA and DHA) for lowering triglycerides. And the FDA concluded that "supportive, but not conclusive evidence shows that consumption of EPA and DHA fatty acids may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease."

Over a dozen studies have been published on the pharmacological effects of tocotrienols. Several in vitro, in vivo and human trials have found that tocotrienols cause significant reductions in serum total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL or "bad") cholesterol. They are believed to work by suppressing the activity of the enzyme 3-hydroxy-3-methyl-glutarylCoA (HMG-CoA) reductase, which controls cholesterol synthesis by the liver.

Available in bottles of 60 gelatin capsules retailing for $29.95, Omeganol can be purchased through the company's website: http://www.calgenex.com.
