Calendered flexible vinyl films.

Three new grades of calendered flexible PVC (polyvinyl chloride) from the Vinyl Division of Teknor Apex are said to provide the low-temperature and high-temperature performance required for such health-care products as cold and hot packs used for arthritis patients and in chiropractic therapy for tendon damage. According to Teknor Apex, the films exhibit brittle points as low as -40[degrees]F and the ability to withstand microwaving or boiling (to heat the gel in the therapy packs).

The company's line of calendered films for medical uses now ranges from 68 to 92 in Shore A durometer (15 sec delay), 2000 to 3200 psi in tensile strength, and 275% to 375% in ultimate elongation, Teknor Apex says. The company adds that, as an independent vinyl compounder that is also a major producer of plasticizers, it can provide calendered film based on a wide range of plasticizers.

All calendered medical films from Teknor Apex are reported to contain only ingredients listed by the FDA in 21 CFR. Raw materials in each lot are documented by vendor and generic type. The company notes that grades are available to meet the requirements of U.S. Pharmacopoeia classes up to and including Class VI. Gamma-sterilizable products are available as well.
