Caine's got spite stuff; Little Voice Premier, 8.30pm - 10.15pm.

SEEDY impresario Michael Caine thinks he can make money from inhibited songbird Jane Horrocks, who only comes alive when singing precise imitations of Judy Garland, Shirley Bassey and Marilyn Monroe.

Bracing British comedy, authentically coarse in Brenda Blethyn's magnificently brassy turn as Horrocks's mother, and wincingly cruel in Caine's beady-eyed portrayal of a drunken chancer careering down dead ends.

His spiteful rendition of Roy Orbison's mawkish old hit It's Over is the highlight of an old-fashioned but entertaining film. With Jane Horrocks, Ewan McGregor, Jim Broadbent, Philip Jackson and Annette Badland. (1998) PPP
