Caged by mum for own safety.

MENTALLY ill Wei Yun has spent most of his 23 years in a cage - because his family can't afford to care for him.

Yun's mum locks him up for his own safety while she goes out to earn a living and his dad works away from home.

He can't walk or talk but there are no state facilities to help him in Gongchuan, south China.

Yun was allowed to crawl around the home as a boy but nearly died after knocking over a pot of boiling water when he was two.

A neighbour said: "It's a hard choice for his mum as she has to do field work and other odd jobs to support the family."

Amnesty International say thousands of mentally ill people in China are forced to live in appalling conditions - especially in rural areas.
