Cafes open to support dementia social care; Cuppa is lifeline for carers and patients.
PEOPLE with dementia are being invited to join a social cafe.
Five cafes are being formed in Holmfirth, Heckmondwike, Cleckheaton, Dewsbury and Denby Dale. Dubbed the T&CO Service, each cafe will run monthly and will provide a social outlet for people who live with dementia and their carers.
Dementia Cafe support worker Margaret Shaw said: "The aim of the cafes is to provide a welcoming place for people who live with dementia and their carers to meet other people in the same circumstances for mutual support and tea and cakes.
"The cafes will be an information point with the ability to signpost people to relevant services and give information.
"They will also have guest speakers coming to talk to the group about issues the members decide upon."
The cafes will be held in church halls and community centres.
Organised by the Leeds Housing Concern, a registered charity, grants have been made available for two years to facilitate the running of the cafes.
It's hoped it will become a volunteer-led scheme afterwards.
And with more than 4,100 Kirklees people with dementia, it is hoped that it will provide a valuable service.
Margaret's role is to encourage volunteers and cafe users to utilise their skills and knowledge to ensure success. She added: "While the dementia cafes will be for both people living with dementia and their carers, the service will also provide the opportunity for learning and experience to a team of volunteers who live locally to each cafe venue.
"We will be offering supervised volunteering opportunities to learning disabled adults and will provide training to all volunteers."
Volunteers will take an active part in running the cafes and receive training in a variety of relevant areas such as safeguarding and dementia awareness. All the cafes take place between 1.30pm and 3.30pm as follows: Denby Dale Methodist Hall, Cumberworth Lane, on the first Thursday each month. Brighton Street Community Centre in Heckmondwike on the first Wednesday of every month. Dewsbury, two groups will be held each month at the Taleem Centre, Orchard Street, Savile Town - the men's group is on the second Tuesday of every month and the ladies group on the fourth Thursday of every month.
Holmfirth Methodist Hall on School Street on the third Tuesday of every month. Cleckheaton, Bar Lounge, Town Hall, Bradford Road on the third Wednesday of every month. There is a pounds 2.50 entrance to cover refreshment costs.
