Cadran the next target for Enzeli.

ENZELI, Ireland's first Ascot Gold Cup winner in 30 years, is likely to miss next month's Goodwood Cup in favour of a break before the Group 1 Prix du Cadran at Longchamp on October 2.

John Oxx, who trains Thursday's big-race winner, said yesterday: "I haven't really had an opportunity to discuss plans with the Aga Khan [Enzeli's owner] but I doubt we'll go for the Goodwood Cup.

"The Prix du Cadran would look an obvious race for him, being the only other Group 1 event over two and a half miles. He could have a run before, maybe in the Irish St Leger.

"However, there are only two weeks between the Irish St Leger and the Cadran, and we may have to look elsewhere."

Levmoss, Ireland's last Gold Cup winner in 1969, went on to win that year's Arc, but Oxx said Enzeli was unlikely to follow that route.

He said: "He isn't entered for the Arc. I suppose if he won the Irish St Leger easily, he could be supplemented, but the Cadran looks the likelier target.

"Enzeli is obviously a much-improved horse. Although he won the Saval Beg Stakes quite easily last month, it was difficult to know how he would fare at Group 1 level over two and a half miles. But he showed that he has made a lot of progress."

That progress was confirmed by the Irish Turf Club's senior Flat handicapper Ciaran Kennelly at Ascot yesterday. He said: "I have raised Enzeli 11lb from 107 to 118."
