Cadbury in factory axe.

BIRMINGHAM-based chocolate giant Cadbury was attacked by trade union leaders today after confirming the closure of a factory, with the loss of 500 jobs. The firm is to go ahead with closing its Somerdale site, near Bristol, and transfering production to Poland.

Unite, which has launched a campaign to try to reverse the decision, accused Cadbury of ignoring business logic, common sense and the environment.

Senior managers say the closure was necessary to protect the balance of UK manufacturing.

"This is a disgraceful decision," said Unite's Brian Revell. "If the rest of the country followed their logic, Britain would be an industrial desert."
