CZECH FITNESS CENTERS GO UPSCALE.

The fitness craze emanating from the United States is gaining a foothold in the Czech Republic. For the gradually swelling ranks of upper middle- to upper-class Czechs, a new breed of upgrade fitness centers is springing up.

Until recently, health-conscious Czechs had to opt for one of the overcrowded gyms that cater to the working class and young professionals. Upscale gyms like the Level 25 Health & Fitness Center and the Eurocell Wellness and Fitness Center in Prague offer a variety of exercise and therapeutic options, but at a high price by Czech standards. At the Level 25 Center a daily pass costs the equivalent of US$16.30.

Both centers offer memberships at a price roughly four times that of the average health center. Additional fees apply for massages and therapeutic baths. The lack of mirrors at the Level 25 club gives away the fact that members are not there only to admire their physiques. Membership serves a double function for affluent but not-so-fit members of Prague society. It allows them to improve their physical fitness while making acquaintance with well-placed members of government and the business community.
