 CYPRUS MINERALS RESTARTS ARIZONA SMELTER,
 RESUMES COPPER PRODUCTION
DENVER, March 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Cyprus Minerals Co. (NYSE: CYM) today announced that its Miami, Ariz. smelter has resumed operation. Copper concentrate feed was introduced into the electric furnace early last week. A Nov. 9, 1991 fire idled the smelter and accelerated the planned shutdown for modernization.
Last week's start-up is the first phase of resuming smelter production in the modernization and expansion project, which is expected to cost approximately $100 million. The second phase is scheduled about July 1 when
the new ISASMELT installation begins operation. In the ensuing 12 months, the smelter's concentrate intake is expected to rise to the design capacity of 650,000 tons annually, a 50 percent increase.
Calvin A. Campbell, Jr., Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer of Cyprus Minerals, said, "When completed, this project will be one of the most important capital improvements Cyprus has undertaken. Not only will it increase our copper concentrate smelting capacity to self-sufficiency during a worldwide shortage of smelting capacity, this modernization is also expected to reduce copper production costs company-wide."
"Sales commitments have been met throughout this period through outside copper purchases, and our customers should experience no change in our performance as we again begin producing our own anodes and electrolytic cathodes," said F. Steven Mooney, President of Cyprus Copper Co., the copper subsidiary of Cyprus Minerals.
Cyprus Minerals is a leading U.S. copper producer and a major producer of coal, lithium, molybdenum, and talc. Cyprus also produces gold, iron ore, and zinc.
