CYPRUS MINERALS ELECTS ROCKWELL SCHNABEL TO BOARD OF DIRECTORS

 DENVER, Feb. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Rockwell A. Schnabel, former Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of Commerce, was today elected to the board of directors of Cyprus Minerals Co. (NYSE: CYM). Schnabel, 56, of Los Angeles, served as Deputy Commerce Secretary from February 1991 to September 1992 and as Acting Secretary of Commerce from December 1991 to March 1992. Prior to moving to the Department of Commerce he was the
U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Finland. His election to the Cyprus board took place at the regular directors' meeting today in Denver.
 Milton H. Ward, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Cyprus Minerals, said, "Rockwell Schnabel's extensive experience in the investment community and knowledge of the international business arena brings extremely valuable expertise to Cyprus' board. He is joining us at a time when the company is increasing its overseas focus on opportunities for new mines as well as markets for our products."
 Schnabel also served as Commerce Department Under Secretary for Travel and Tourism, as a member of the Los Angeles 1984 Olympic Organizing Committee, and as Envoy to the Netherlands for the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. From 1965 to 1983 he held various positions with Hill Richards Group Inc., including president of BEHR Group Inc., a member of the New York Stock Exchange. Currently, he is resuming his career in the investment business.
 Cyprus Minerals, headquartered in Englewood, Colo., is a major producer of copper, coal, lithium and molybdenum. Cyprus also produces gold, iron ore and zinc.
