CYPRUS AMAX NAMES F.J. KANE AS V.P. INVESTOR RELATIONS, TREASURER

 DENVER, Jan. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Cyprus Amax Minerals Company (NYSE: CYM) today named Francis J. Kane, New York investment banking executive, to the new position of Vice President Investor Relations and Treasurer. The appointment of Kane, 35, is effective immediately. He will report to Gerald J. Malys, Cyprus Amax Minerals Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer.
 He joins Cyprus Amax from his position as Associate Director, Relationship Officer for Bear Stearns & Co. Inc., a global investment banking firm based in New York. Kane joined Bear Stearns in 1990 and was involved in developing financial and strategic opportunities for clients, including issuing and repurchasing debentures, notes, and stock, the placement of equity, and international project debt.
 Kane will assume the duties of two former Vice Presidents who left the Company: Dennis C. Haugh, former Treasurer, and Richard H. Hagman, who headed the Public and Investor Relations Department. These functions are being combined.
 A 1980 geological sciences graduate of Harvard University, Kane also is a 1985 M.B.A. graduate of Harvard's Graduate School of Business. He previously worked as Manager of Capital Markets and Exposure Management for United Technologies Corporation and as Assistant Manager, Currency, and Interest Rate Risk at Union Carbide Corporation.
 Kane also brings mining industry experience to Cyprus Amax, having worked as a consultant in the Mining and Metals Unit of Arthur D. Little, Inc. and as a geologist at Hanna Mining Company.
