CWA, MALDEF TO ANNOUNCE RESULTS OF LAWSUIT AGAINST CONTEL OF CALIFORNIA

CWA, MALDEF TO ANNOUNCE RESULTS OF LAWSUIT
 AGAINST CONTEL OF CALIFORNIA
The Communications Workers of America and the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund will hold a news conference on Monday, Aug. 31, at 10:30 a.m. at the CWA Local 9410 office, 240 Second Street, Second Floor, in San Francisco.
This "first of its kind" decision protects the rights of bilingual workers to equal treatment and recognition of special skills. It also breaks important ground in acknowledging the responsibilities companies have to provide quality service to their non-English-speaking customers.
CWA and five individual plaintiffs represented by MALDEF challenged Contel's policy requiring employees of Hispanic national origin and background to use their Spanish skills without compensation. According to CWA, Contel had disciplined workers who refused to comply with their compulsory language policy. Contel of California, a subsidiary of GTE, provides telephone service to the California Central Valley region.
Speakers will include Janice Wood, vice president, CWA District Nine; Antonio Salazar-Hobson, counsel, CWA District Nine; Esteban Lizardo, MALDEF; Laura Valles, Latino Issues Forum; Jose Medina, executive director, Instituto Laboral; Mario Salgado, executive director, La Raza Centro Legal; and Lupita Romero and Anna Esqueda, plaintiffs.
CONTACT: Gaye Williams Mack of Communications Workers of America, 202-434-1172; Anthony Galvan of MALDEF, 213-629-2512; or CWA Local 9410, 415-777-9410.
