CUVAISON WINERY EXECUTIVES CIRCLE THE GLOBE FOR WINE
NAPA, Calif., Oct. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Cuvaison president, Manfred Esser, and vice-president and winemaker, John Thacher, found themselves at opposite ends of the world recently on behalf of the wine industry and their own Napa Valley Winery.
Thacher was in Japan for a series of lectures and tastings sponsored by the Wine Institute. There, he visited four cities and gave presentations to large groups of top Japanese sommeliers in: Sapporo, Kobe, Fukuoka and Tokyo.
Esser just returned from four busy weeks in Europe where he participated in a major California wine tasting in Berlin and Zurich and spoke at the European Wine Festival in Mainz, Germany, with 700 participating wineries, 50 from California. It is one of the largest wine events on the continent, Esser reported.
After Germany, Esser traveled to Brussels for a trade tasting at which 75 top restaurants and retailers attended. Then on to Stockholm, which Esser believes will become an even better market for California wines now that the state monopoly is breaking up. He then visited EuroDisney outside of Paris, where California wines account for 50 percent of wine sales at the new theme park. After France, Esser put on a winery dinner at the famed Girdino restaurant in Asconoa, Switzerland.
With all that wine, some food was necessary, so Esser booked into Marcella Hazan's cooking school in Venice for the intensive, one-week course.
In the last year, Cuvaison has put a major emphasis on imports. The winery now exports 20 percent of its production overseas, the largest percentage of any super-premium winery. Esser is also the spokesman for the Wine Institute in Switzerland, Germany, and Austria.
