CUTLASS CIERA NAMED 'SAFE CAR OF THE YEAR' BY PREVENTION MAGAZINE
LANSING, Mich., March 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Prevention magazine, a Rodale publication and the nation's leading health publication with over 9 million monthly readers, has named the Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera as its 1992 domestic "Safe Car of the Year."
In recognition of the Cutlass Ciera's outstanding safety record and as a means of emphasizing vehicle safety and driver responsibility, Prevention donated $5,000 to the Ingham County (Mich.) chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD).
The Cutlass Ciera was chosen based on its performance in government and private insurer safety evaluations. The two primary criteria were occupant death rates and crash test results. The criteria were then adjusted to reflect the size and weight of the automobile, its total number of vehicle registrations, driver age and sex, and predicted and actual death rates in accidents.
Over 65 cars were evaluated for their performance under these conditions. The Cutlass Ciera was then chosen domestic "Safe Car of the Year" for the years 1987 through 1989, the latest years available for the information.
"Over 2 million Cutlass Cieras have been built in the past decade and more than 96 percent are still actively being driven -- outstanding testimony to the car's long-term durability and safety. Now that's the power of intelligent engineering," said General Marketing Manager Michael Grimaldi who accepted the award on behalf of Oldsmobile, its vehicle engineering partners at the Chevrolet-Pontiac-GM of Canada Group, and the manufacturing team in Oklahoma City.
"However, building a safe car is just the beginning," added Grimaldi. "Drivers must wear their seat belts and must be in absolute control of their vehicle. That's why we're so proud to have $5,000 donated to MADD in recognition of this award."
