CUSTOMS COMMISSIONER WEISE PRAISES DECONCINI FOR YEARS OF SERVICE

WASHINGTON, Sept. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Commissioner of Customs George J. Weise deeply regrets the retirement decision announced today by Sen. Dennis DeConcini (D-Ariz.). According to Weise: "Chairman DeConcini has been an unwavering supporter of the Customs Service for his entire Congressional career. There is probably no other member of Congress who understands the critical border issues as well as he does. Sen. DeConcini has long and well represented not only the citizens of Arizona, but he has, with a single sense of mission, provided for the security of every American."
Weise continued: "I can say without hesitation that the senator is responsible for the Customs air program, new and secure border facilities, and state-of-the-art detection gear and computer resources that each Customs employee relies on to perform his or her daily duties. Sen. DeConcini is a believer in law and order, and it is clear from his actions that he is an ardent believer in the Customs mission.
"Those of us who have benefited from his support know that the United States would not have been able to even attempt the drug war without the support and backing of Chairman DeConcini.
"Sen. DeConcini began his career in the Senate almost 16 years ago, and he should know upon his retirement that he goes with our respect, and that his contributions will be long remembered by each and every Customs employee."
