CUSTOMERS ADVOCATE AS/400 AS CLIENT SERVER OF CHOICE

NEW YORK, March 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Four users of the IBM Application System/400 (A), the world's most popular business computer system, today described how the AS/400(A) serves as the hub of their client/server computing environments, empowering users to share mission-critical data and applications.
Information systems executives from Chase Manhattan Private Bank, Miami; Management Information Support, Inc., Lakewood, Colo.; Mannington Carpets, Inc., Calhoun, Ga.; and the Columbia County, Ga., government described the AS/400 as their server of choice in an IBM Client/Server Implementation Forum.
"Using the AS/400 as a server assists us in allowing worldwide access to critical information on a timely basis," said Ray Calloway II, vice president of Chase Manhattan Private Bank. "We are now moving closer toward allowing customer service representatives to be able to respond immediately to customer requests and access global marketing data to improve customer service."
Chase Manhattan Private Bank gains a competitive edge by using the AS/400 within their 24-hour global network which connects hundreds of IBM PS/2s(A) around the world to banking databases and applications. Data on the AS/400 can be accessed through graphical screens supporting OS/2(A), Microsoft Windows(B), RUMBA/400(B) and Easel(B) applications. Marketing professionals use data from several countries to tailor specific investment programs for Chase's international banking customers.
The commissioners and public safety officials in Columbia County, located in northeast Georgia, use the client/server capabilities of two AS/400s to provide a high level of service to the 70,000 residents in this rapidly growing county. The commissioners' AS/400 is used for administrative services such as tax billing, contracts, motor vehicle licenses and voter registration. The public safety AS/400 permits law enforcement officials to provide services necessary for the safety and protection of the county's citizens, such as jail management, court records, photo imaging and jury selection.
Motor vehicle licensing information, captured at the time of sale and stored on the database of the administrative AS/400, can be instantly accessed from any officer's terminal. A sophisticated imaging application also allows investigators to enter the identifying characteristics of suspects on a PS/2 terminal and search image files stored on the AS/400 to create an "electronic line-up" of suspects.
"In addition to the fact that every application we needed was available on the AS/400, the client/server capabilities of the AS/400 allow us to share information among government agencies without an unnecessary duplication of effort," said Steve Szablewski, country administrator of the Columbia County government. "By sharing data on the two systems, we ensure data integrity and gain wider access to vast amounts of information."
Management Information Support, Inc., one of 12 operating companies supporting The Bailey Company, the parent franchise company for 62 Arby's restaurants, has created an Executive Information System (EIS) to ensure quick and easy access to critical data residing on the AS/400. This allows executives to make fully-informed management decisions based on data easily accessible from their desktops.
"Where we formerly provided accounting maintenance for all of the franchises, the AS/400 has expanded the role of IS in our company to be a supplier of critical real-time management information," said Ray Mueller, president of Management Information Support. "With the power of the EIS running on the AS/400, we can provide on-line data to decision makers, enabling them to proactively respond and plan for foreseeable trends."
Mannington Carpets, a manufacturer of high-quality commercial and residential flooring products, used the AS/400 platform and client/server technology to create a new system called PC Vision. PC Vision links Mannington distributors to order entry and customer service systems in real-time, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Production planning systems can extract relevant information from the database to the manufacturing floor, linked real-time to the manufacturing process. All data can be displayed or loaded to remote PCs at the user's request.
"Implementing an AS/400 client/server environment moved information systems out of the computer room and into the hands of our people," said Taylor Moore, vice president of logistics and IS, Mannington Mills. "Providing all of our end users OfficeVision/400 (A) capabilities has greatly increased information flow and improved communications at all levels within the organization."
A perspective into the client/server marketplace and the advantages of the AS/400 over PC-based servers was given by Ken Sobel-Feldman, president of Sage Associates, a firm specializing in vendor market positioning in client/server, open systems, networking and database interoperability technologies. Sage Associates' mission is to help vendors develop better marketing messages to present to industry analysts and research firms.
"The AS/400 is an excellent platform for the client/server environment because of its diverse connectivity options and its exploitation of the power of PCs for accessing information from the AS/400 and other databases in an enterprise-wide network," said Sobel- Feldman.
