CUSTOMERS, EXPAND THEIR SYSTEMS INTEGRATION CAPABILITIES IN EUROPE

CUSTOMERS, EXPAND THEIR SYSTEMS INTEGRATION CAPABILITIES IN EUROPE
PARIS, France, Nov. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Digital Equipment Corp. (NYSE: DEC), Europe and Apple Computer Europe Inc. today announced that they have signed a letter of intent covering the supply by Digital of Apple Macintosh computers to its customers and the distribution of Digital interconnect products, VAX and RISC-based servers, and Apple-related desktop services through Apple's dedicated reseller network in Europe.
The announcement which was made at the Digital partners symposium in Vienna, represents a further level of commitment to customers which began with the Digital/Apple agreements announced almost 4 years ago, in January, 1988, concerning technical connectivity joint developments. This first agreement resulted in the PATHWORKS desktop interconnect products, and a large number of customers of both companies have already embraced these as the foundation upon which to build various solutions in areas critical to their business.
Once the final agreements are concluded by early next year, Apple will begin to supply Macintosh computers and Macintosh-based expertise to Digital which will in turn include them within its extensive range of system integration capabilities, ranked among the top three worldwide. Digital will then provide these products and services to customers, and at the same time will distribute Apple Macintosh products in connection with its own products as part of its own solutions.
At the same time, Digital will begin to provide PATHWORKS interconnect products, VAX and RISC-based servers, and a wide range of desktop services to customers through the extensive range of Apple Centers in Europe.
"We will be very pleased to have Digital providing Macintosh- based systems integration services to customers and to give Apple Centers the opportunity to complement their offer of outstanding networking solutions to their customers" said Sren Olsson, president of Apple Europe. "We have seen the demand of such Digital/Apple based systems growing in our customer base, and we believe that this agreement with Digital will make it easy for customers and resellers to fulfill their needs."
"The combination of Apple's leadership and commitment to make it easy for people to use computers, and Digital's leadership and success in making computers work in a network, will provide exactly the kind of solution users want now, and will need in the future," said Pier Carlo Falotti, president of Digital Equipment Corp. in Europe. "Customers are increasingly demanding the technology and support which can only come from an alliance of innovation and responsiveness such as we have announced today."
