CURTIS INSTRUMENTS ESTABLISHES SUBSIDIARY IN SWITZERLAND

MT. KISCO, N.Y., March 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Curtis Instruments Inc. today announced the formation of Curtis Instruments AG, a wholly owned subsidiary, in Obergerlafingen, Switzerland. The unit will specialize in designing motor controllers for certain types of battery-powered vehicles.

Curtis is the world's largest producer of instruments and controls for electric forklifts, mobility aids, golf cars, mine locomotives and other vehicles. The Curtis PMC division pioneered new technology for motor controllers in the 1980s and its products are in use worldwide. "Products designed by Curtis AG will complement the extensive line of controllers which Curtis now produces," said Edward M. Marwell, Curtis president.

Establishment of the subsidiary followed the purchase by Curtis of the drive-control product line of Zaugg Elektronik AG, of Lohn, Switzerland. In recent years Zaugg personnel had developed expertise in designing specialized controllers for motorized wheelchairs.

Kurt Stump, former chief design engineer for motor controllers at Zaugg, was named managing director of Curtis Instruments AG. Former Zaugg colleagues plus several new people form the nucleus of the subsidiary, which will operate as a research and development center. Products designed by this team will be manufactured at an established Curtis factory.

In addition to its flagship factory and world headquarters in Mt. Kisco, N.Y., Curtis has production facilities in Dublin, Calif.; Carolina, P.R.; Northampton, England; Clichy, France; Fraureuth, Germany; Sofia, Bulgaria; and is building its newest factory in Suzhou, China.
