CURTICE BURNS COMPLETES NATIONAL OATS AND HILAND SALES

ROCHESTER, N.Y., Nov. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Curtice Burns Foods (AMEX: CBI), a food processor, today announced the completion of two previously announced sales: the oat milling portion of its National Oats division to Ralston Purina, and certain assets of its Hiland Potato Chip Company to Weaver Potato Chip of Lincoln, Neb. The National Oats division was based in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Hiland Potato Chip in Des Moines, Iowa.
These two transactions represent the first sales closed as a part of the restructuring program announced by Curtice Burns on Aug. 18, 1993. "We are pleased with the progress being made in implementing our restructuring program," said J. William Petty, president and chief executive officer, "and we will continue to move forward aggressively in our commitment to enhance shareholder value by exiting unprofitable or non-strategic businesses."
Under the National Oats transaction, responsibility for the popcorn business of National Oats and its Ridgway, Ill. and North Bend, Neb. facilities has been transferred to the Comstock Michigan Fruit Division of Curtice Burns. The popcorn labels include 3-Minute Brand, Super-Pop, Pops-Rite and Popeye.
In the Hiland transaction, Weaver will continue to distribute the Hiland and Old Vienna brand snacks in the Des Moines and St. Louis areas, using the existing direct store-door delivery system. Weaver will consolidate production, management and administration of the Hiland and Old Vienna snack lines into its Lincoln facility.
Curtice Burns processes and markets 22 product lines of regional branded, private label and foodservice products through eight autonomously managed divisions located throughout the United States and Western Canada.
