CUMMINS & WHITE AFFILIATION LARGEST IN WORLD; FOUNDING FIRM CITES CLIENT NEEDS AS DRIVE FOR GROWTH

LOS ANGELES, June 9 /PRNewswire/ -- The Los Angeles and Orange County-based law firm of Cummins & White, a founding member of Commercial Law Affiliates (CLA), a non-profit international association of law firms network, announces that CLA has just become the largest law firm network in the world.
The brainchild of Minneapolis attorney Leon I. Steinberg, CLA was founded in 1990 because of the difficulties lawyers experienced when trying to find qualified counsel other cities. Cummins & White and other law firms across the United States joined Steinberg in founding the network, which has since expanded internationally to its current size of 124 firms worldwide.
According to Cummins & White's managing partner Jim Otto, membership in CLA has enabled his firm to provide counsel as well as geographic representation to client companies around the world, offering enhanced services and resources to clients globally. "I was always apprehensive about the quality of service my clients would receive when I referred them to firms in other cities," Otto said. "There was no system to ensure that clients would be well taken care of and that firms wouldn't be predatory towards my relationships. CLA solved these problems.
"We also found that the tougher we made the membership requirements, the more firms wanted to become involved. The idea of all members having to meet the same standards, and having systems in place to assure that these standards are met, gave us great confidence when referring our clients," Otto added.
CLA is the only international network where prospective firms must meet strict quality-control criteria in order to be accepted as members. Firms also must adhere to a number of rigorous on-going requirements -- such as a referral evaluation process -- designed to closely monitor the quality of services.
CLA's newest international member firms are located in Vienna, Austria; Hamilton, Bermuda; Copenhagen, Denmark; Paris; Athens, Greece; Milan and Rome, Italy; Madrid, Spain; Geneva and Zurich, Switzerland; Taipei, Taiwan/ROC; and Caracas, Venezuela.
U.S. firms have recently joined in the following markets: Mobile, Ala.; Fresno, Calif.; Jacksonville and Tampa, Fla.; Charleston, S.C.; Nashville, Tenn.; Amarillo and Austin, Texas; Burlington and Middlebury, Vt.; Richmond, Va.; and Seattle.
"We never really envisioned being the largest -- nor has that been a goal," CLA President Steinberg added. "Our growth has been driven by member and client needs for assistance in an increasing number of jurisdictions across the world," he said.
