CTFA ADDRESSES ISSUES AT LEGISLATIVE DAY.

* Industry issues were highlighted at the CTFA's Legislative Day May 24 on Capitol Hill. The agenda included such topics as the FDA's budget and regulations, cosmetic-related trade and air quality issues. Congressman Ray LaHold (R-IL) commented on the recent actions of the Bush administration, including the tax cut bill. The U.S. House of Representatives began consideration of the President's energy legislation and Congress considered tax cuts.

Highlighted topics included the recent Melanoma/Skin Cancer Awareness Day and current Clean Air Act requirements. Other topics were discussed by representatives from the FDA, the House Energy and Commerce Committee, the Senate Air Quality Subcomittee, the House Ways and Means Committee and the International Mass Retail Association.

Global Issues Discussed at CTFA International Conference

* Industry professionals from the U.S., the European Union (EU), Latin America and Australia met in Bermuda for the CTFA International Legal and Regulatory Conference April 25-28. The business session, "Launching a worldwide product: a panel discussion," included speakers Janet Blaschke of International Cosmetics & Regulatory Specialists LLC; Bruce D. Varner of Unilever HPC U.S.A. and Raulee Marcus from Pinnacle Management. The speakers explored hypothetical situations that manufacturers may face when labelling and promoting their products globally. The International advertising regulation session outlined the directives that govern advertising in Europe.

Other topics included an International intellectual property update; an explanation of the precautionary principle approach to regulations and codes of conduct for multinational companies and an outline of the difficulties of expanding EU membership beyond its current 15-member count.
