CSXT REACHES CONDUCTOR-ONLY AGREEMENT ON L&N PORTION OF SYSTEM

CSXT REACHES CONDUCTOR-ONLY AGREEMENT ON L&N PORTION OF SYSTEM
JACKSONVILLE, Fla., July 30 /PRNewswire/ -- CSX Transportation Inc. (CSXT) announced today that the United Transportation Union (UTU) has ratified a "conductor-only" agreement that will eliminate brakeman positions for through-freight operations on the former Louisville & Nashville (L&N) portion of its system. This agreement only applies to former L&N train-service employees.
The agreement permits CSXT to operate through-freight trains with a conductor and engineer on the former L&N, which represents about one- third of CSXT's system covering parts of Kentucky, Tennessee, Illinois, Indiana, Alabama, Georgia and Florida. It does not include train length, car limit or work-event restrictions.
Under terms of the agreement, which will be implemented Aug. 10, employees may elect to leave active service and receive a voluntary severance payment in the amount of $60,000. It also provides employment opportunities for all surplus employees in lieu of hiring new employees when the need arises. The agreement also includes a buyout of the productivity fund and short-crew allowance.
A similar agreement was ratified in May on the former Seaboard Coast Line. Conductor-only agreements now cover nearly 60 percent of CSXT's 9,100 train-service employees.
CSXT and its 35,000 employees provide rail transportation and distribution services over an 18,800 route-mile network in 20 states, the District of Columbia and Ontario, Canada. CSXT is a business unit of CSX Corporation (NYSE: CSX), headquartered in Richmond, Va.
