CSX TRANSPORTATION REACHES CONDUCTOR-ONLY AGREEMENT WITH UTU

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., July 1 /PRNewswire/ -- CSX Transportation Inc. (CSXT) announced today that the United Transportation Union (UTU) has ratified an agreement that will eliminate brakeman positions on the former Baltimore & Ohio (B&O), Baltimore & Ohio Chicago Terminal (B&OCT), Pere Marquette and Hocking Valley portions of its system.
The agreement, which is being implemented today, permits CSXT to operate freight service with only a conductor and engineer on the former B&O, B&OCT, Pere Marquette and Hocking Valley. This means conductor- only agreements are in place on 88 percent of CSXT's rail system, as the current agreement covers roughly one-quarter of the system, including all or portions of Delaware, the District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia.
Under the terms of the agreement, which does not include any train length, car limit or work-event restrictions, employees may elect to receive a voluntary separation package totaling $80,000, including a buyout of productivity fund and short-crew allowance. A similar agreement covering the former Chesapeake and Ohio Railway (C&O) portions of the CSXT system is awaiting ratification later this month.
If the C&O ratification takes place, CSXT will have virtually its entire rail system covered by reduced conductor-only agreements.
CSXT and its 31,000 employees provide rail transportation and distribution services over an 18,900 route-mile network in 20 states, the District of Columbia and Ontario, Canada. CSXT is a business unit of CSX Corporation (NYSE: CSX), headquartered in Richmond, Va.
