CSX TRANSPORTATION REACHES CONDUCTOR-ONLY AGREEMENT WITH UTU

CSX TRANSPORTATION REACHES CONDUCTOR-ONLY AGREEMENT WITH UTU
JACKSONVILLE, Fla., April 20 /PRNewswire/ -- CSX Transportation Inc. (CSXT) announced today that the United Transportation Union (UTU) has ratified an agreement that will eliminate brakemen positions for through-freight operations on the former Seaboard Coast Line portion of its system.
The agreement permits CSXT to operate through-freight trains on the former Seaboard Coast Line -- about one-third of CSXT's system covering all or portions of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Alabama -- with a conductor and an engineer. This agreement does not include any train length, car limit or work-event restrictions.
Under terms of the agreement, employees may elect to receive a voluntary severance in the amount of $60,000. It also provides employment opportunity for all surplus employees in lieu of hiring new employees when the need arises. The agreement also includes a buyout of the productivity fund and short-crew allowance.
While not the first, this is by far the largest conductor-only agreement reached between CSXT and the UTU. In January, a similar agreement was ratified on the former Georgia Road portion of CSXT's system, from Augusta, Ga., to Atlanta.
Similar negotiations are continuing with the UTU covering the Louisville & Nashville and Chesapeake & Ohio/Baltimore & Ohio portions of the CSXT system.
CSXT and its 35,000 employees provide rail transportation and distribution services over an 18,800 route-mile network in 20 states, the District of Columbia and Ontario, Canada. CSXT is a business unit of CSX Corporation (NYSE: CSX), headquartered in Richmond, Va.
