CSX TRANSPORTATION ANNOUNCES TENTATIVE AGREEMENT REACHED WITH UNITED TRANSPORTATION UNION

 JACKSONVILLE, Fla., April 22 /PRNewswire/ -- CSX Transportation Inc. (CSXT) announced today it has reached tentative agreement with the United Transportation Union (UTU) that will permit "conductor-only" freight operations on the former Chesapeake & Ohio/Baltimore & Ohio portion of its system.
 The negotiators are working out final details, following which the agreement will be subject to ratification by employees represented by the UTU.
 A.R. "Pete" Carpenter, president and chief executive officer of CSXT, said that "ratification of this agreement will virtually complete negotiation and implementation of conductor-only agreements on our rail system. These agreements are vitally important to our ability to compete effectively in today's highly competitive transportation marketplace."
 Prior to today's announcement, CSXT and the UTU had reached agreements on conductor-only operations covering approximately 60 percent of the rail system.
 Terms of the agreement were not disclosed by company officials pending ratification of the crew consist agreement.
 CSXT and its 29,300 employees provide rail transportation and distribution services over an 18,900 route-mile network in 20 states, the District of Columbia and Ontario, Canada. CSXT is a business unit of CSX Corporation (NYSE: CSX), headquartered in Richmond, Va.
