CSX TRANSPORTATION ANNOUNCES CONDUCTOR-ONLY AGREEMENT WITH UTU
JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Jan. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- CSX Transportation Inc. (CSXT) today announced ratification of a conductor-only agreement with the United Transportation Union (UTU) that will immediately eliminate brakemen positions for through freight operations on the former Georgia Road portion of its system.
The ratification of this precedent-setting agreement marks the first step in CSXT's efforts to reduce its crew size from three to two -- an engineer and conductor.
John W. Snow, chairman and chief executive officer of CSX Corporation (NYSE: CSX), said, "This encouraging agreement establishes a positive framework within which the railroad is negotiating agreements covering other of its predecessor lines."
Upon implementation of the agreement, all through freight trains on the Georgia Road, from Augusta, Ga., to Atlanta, can be operated with a conductor and an engineer. The conductor-only operation does not include any train length, car limit or work event restrictions.
Under the terms of the agreement, surplus employees can sign up for a voluntary severance allowance of $60,000, or they can fall back into a reserve pool. However, after 1992, there is a provision for an involuntary severance allowance of $45,000 for reserve pool employees, if attrition goals are not met.
The agreement also includes a buyout of the productivity fund and short-crew allowance.
Beginning in 1988, CSX Transportation and the UTU reached agreements providing for reduced crew size operations of three persons on over 98 percent of the CSX system.
CSX Transportation Inc. and its 36,000 employees provide rail transportation and distribution services over an 18,800 route-mile network in 20 states, the District of Columbia and Ontario, Canada. CSXT is a business unit of CSX Corporation, headquartered in Richmond, Va.
