CSX TRAIN DERAILS IN KENTUCKY
CSX TRAIN DERAILS IN KENTUCKY JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Nov. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- At approximately
12:15 p.m. EST today, a CSX Transportation train headed north out of Nashville derailed near Shepherdsville, Ky., sending 14 cars off a rail trestle over the Salt River and resulting in a fire and evacuation of the immediate area.
A total of 28 cars derailed at a railroad bridge approximately nine miles south of Louisville. The ensuing fire among cars toppled into the river forced local authorities to evacuate the immediate vicinity, including a school. No materials rated as hazardous were in the derailed portion of the train in the river, "but we are taking the utmost caution and have ordered full containment procedures," said Jerry R. Davis, executive vice president-operations for CSX Transportation. The 14 cars that left the rail trestle contained pulpboard, lumber, sugar and methylene-diphenyl-diisocyanate (MDI). MDI is a liquid chemical used primarily for production of polyurethane resins and plastics. The car loaded with MDI was not believed to be in the water, but suspended in the wreckage of the rail trestle. The car was not believed to be leaking. Authorities at the scene reported that the derailment occurred after a garbage truck hit a roadway underpass damaging track structure of the adjacent rail bridge over the Salt River while the train was occupying the track overhead. No injuries to the crew of the train were reported. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
