 CSX/SEA-LAND LOGISTICS SIGNS CONTRACT WITH
THE FUND FOR DEMOCRACY AND DEVELOPMENT
WASHINGTON, April 1 /PRNewswire/ -- CSX/Sea-Land Logistics (CSL Logistics) announced today it has signed a contract with the Fund for Democracy and Development (FDD) to provide the logistics management for all privately donated emergency food shipments from the United States to the former Soviet Union.
Under the agreement, CSL Logistics will manage the worldwide movement of goods donated by U.S. organizations to the Commonwealth of Independent States.
CSL Logistics will oversee the consolidation and movement of these goods from their points of origin to whatever destinations are agreed upon by the Fund and members of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).
CSL Logistics will manage air cargo as well as intermodal, container and rail movements.
CSL Logistics, a unit of CSX Corporation (NYSE: CSX), will provide FDD with such services as carrier selection and routing and scheduling of transportation inside the United States and Commonwealth of Independent States and arrange ocean and air shipments as well.
In addition, CSL Logistics will select and coordinate warehousing and the consolidation of cargoes and handle all other key services, such as export documentation preparation, computerized shipment tracking and tracing and consolidated billing for all transport and logistics services.
"CSX/Sea-Land Logistics is extremely pleased to be taking part in this humanitarian effort," said Andrew B. Fogarty, president of Logistics.
"Since the early days of the industrialization of America when our predecessor rail companies provided key logistical and transport support, right on through Operation Desert Storm, CSX and its units have responded to unique transportation challenges. We are proud to be taking a similar role once again in the effort to bring relief to the peoples of the CIS."
"As with Kuwait's emergency recovery program, CSL Logistics' unique information and management system will be the linchpin in America's efforts to help our friends in the CIS," said Shar Javad, managing director of CSL Logistics.
"The FDD advises us that there are indications hundreds of containers of relief supplies will be moving in the coming months. We are proud that once more we can turn the unique capability of SPACSTM to such a good cause," Javad added.
Logistics was the distribution manager for the Kuwait Emergency Recovery Program, directing the movement from 22 nations to Kuwait of 4 million items, ranging from surgical sutures to fire engines.
Javad said that Logistics began directing the movement of relief supplies for the FDD in mid-February.
Today, he said, CSL Logistics is overseeing 70 containers loaded with about 1,400 tons of food and medical supplies that are already in the pipeline, and the Fund already has received transportation requests from private organizations for the movement of another 90 containers.
Private organizations in all parts of the nation are contributing supplies. The Fund, which receives transportation funding from the State Department, is supplying the transport for 17 containers of food and medical supplies from five communities in northeastern Tennessee, more than 30 containers from the United Methodist Churches, and individual loads from such diverse communities as Oroville, Calif.; Aurora, Col.; Paterson, N.J.; and Jacksonville, Fla.
The Fund for Democracy and Development, based in Washington, was created at the suggestion of Presidents Yeltsin and Gorbachev to serve as an umbrella organization in mobilizing and coordinating private- sector humanitarian and development assistance from America to the people of the CIS.
CSX/Sea-Land Logistics provides global distribution management to a wide variety of industries and government bodies around the world.
CSX Corporation, headquartered in Richmond, Va., is an international transportation company offering a variety of rail, container-shipping, intermodal, trucking and barge services.
