CSSA Headquarters report, 2002.

This report covers the calendar and fiscal period 1 Jan. to 31 Dec. 2002. It is meant to recap the information on membership, publications, finances, and other items of interest to the members.

Membership. As of 31 Dec. 2002 the Society had 3639 members compared with 3751 on 31 Dec. 2001. This represents a decrease of 112 members (Table 1).

The Societies are focused on retaining and recruiting members, having hired a Membership Marketing and Communications Manager in March 2002.

Several initiatives for the coming year include surveying Sustaining Members to improve the overall program and recruit new Sustaining Member companies in the Society.

The Societies also are actively communicating to undergraduate members through several articles in their student newsletter, including articles on undergraduate membership and certification programs. To more effectively promote membership, the Societies have revamped the membership brochure to make it more informative, less text-heavy, and more graphically appealing. It will be used for membership mailings and to hand out at regional meetings.

Finally, each Society has created a decal for members to receive once they meet specific milestones of new, 5, 15, and 25 plus years. A letter thanking them for their continued membership will accompany the decals.

Publications. Circulation of Crop Science in 2002 was 3053 compared with 3651 in 2001; this represents a decrease of 598 subscribers.

Circulation for Journal of Environmental Quality stood at 2491 as compared with 2892 in 2001, a loss of 401 subscribers (Table 2).

It should be noted that the major portion of the decrease in circulation for Crop Science is in the area of member subscribers; this also holds true of Agronomy Journal and Soil Science Society of America Journal.

The Society did not publish any new book titles in 2002. At the time this report was prepared, the Headquarters staff is working on Improving the Productivity and Sustainability of Rice-Wheat Systems: Issues and Impacts, ASA Special Publication no. 65 (ASA-CSSA-SSSA) and Silage Science and Technology, Agronomy Monograph no. 42 (ASA-CSSA-SSSA).

Finances. For the fiscal year ending 31 Dec. 2002, the Society had total income of $1 179 030 and expense of $1 206 318 for a loss of $27 288; combined with investment portfolio loss of $188 116 shows a net loss of $215 404. The Society spent $38 451 to fund special opportunity projects. These funds came out of the Opportunity Reserve portion of the investment portfolio.

During fiscal 2002 total income for the ASA, CSSA, and SSSA amounted to $5 631 566 and expenses totaled $5 749 365 for a loss of $117 799 for the year (Table 3). These figures do not include a loss of $1 082 867 from the investment portfolio of ASA, CSSA, and SSSA. The net loss for the Societies is $1 200 666. More information is given in Table 4 regarding separate and combined assets and liabilities on 31 Dec. 2002 for the Societies. In 2002, the Societies spent $288 443 to fund special opportunity programs. Funding for these projects came from the Opportunity Reserve portion of the respective Society's investment portfolio.

A study of the C211 Budget and Finance report in this issue of Crop Science reveals that the anticipated expense for the year 2003 will exceed income by $41 568. No portfolio earnings were estimated due to the uncertainty of the volatile stock market.

Investments. For 2002, investments for the Societies were divided into two parts; specifically, the funds in the portfolio being managed by Geneva Capital Management, Northern Capital Management and NorthTrack PSE Tech 100 Index and the operational funds available for the use and for investment by Headquarters for short periods of time when not needed for operation. The portfolio transactions are summarized in Table 5I. Table 5II summarizes the results of the short-term investments.

Other Items. To obtain a complete picture of what is being discussed, acted on, or suggested in the Society, you are encouraged to read the annual reports and minutes of the various meetings of the Executive Committee and Board of Directors held during the year, as well as minutes from the divisional business meetings. The minutes are printed in this issue of Crop Science.

Closing Remarks. The new Executive Officers for 2002-2003 are P. Stephen Baenziger, President; Kenneth J. Moore, President-Elect; and Vivien G. Allen, Past President. Special thanks are extended to David A. Sleper who has served in all three executive positions. A vote of thanks for their service also is extended to retiring Board of Directors' members H. Thomas Stalker, R. Howard Skinner, Joseph G. Lauer, Gregory E. Welbaum, Tom K. Danneberger, Vern S. Baron, Wayne A. Parrott, Brett F. Carver, Donald M. Vietor, and John L. Cisar.
