CS for promotion of cloth bags for shopping.

LAHORE -- Chief ecretary Yousaf Naseem Khokhar has said the people should use cloth bags for shopping to help phase out polythene bags which were causing immense environmental degradation.

Speaking to media persons during a surprise visit to the Shadman Ramazan Bazaar on Sunday, he said the polythene bags would be phased out in the big cities and in the second phase in small cities across the province.

Mr Khokhar said the number of price-control magistrates had been increased in the province for effective monitoring and controlling the prices during Ramazan.

He said the availability of the daily-use commodities at fixed prices would be ensured in Ramazan bazaars as well as open market and stern action would be taken against profiteers and hoarders.

He ordered separate queues for senior citizens at Ramazan bazaars so that they should not face any problem.

He said the Punjab government was giving huge subsidy on essential items to provide relief to the common man.

Besides a strict check on the prices and quality, he said, supply and demand of daily-use items would also be ensured to avoid shortage of any commodity during the month.

The chief secretary inspected different stalls and asked consumers about the quality and the prices of eatables. He also issued instructions regarding cleanliness arrangements in Ramazan bazaars. He ordered that the number of counters be increased in case of rush of buyers.

He said the arrangements at Ramazan bazaars would be reviewed on a daily basis, adding that directions had been issued to all officers to conduct regular visits the bazaars.
