CRSS SUBSIDIARY AWARDED CONTRACT FOR COAL GASIFICATION FACILITY

HOUSTON, Jan. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- The Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded CRS Sirrine Engineers, Inc., a subsidiary of CRSS Inc. (NYSE: CRX), a contract for design and construction of the $24.8 million Coal Gasification Product Improvement Facility (GPIF) to be located at the Fort Martin Power Generating Station near Morgantown, W. Va.
The purpose of the GPIF is to develop systems that will lead to the commercialization of a coal gasification technology for the production of electric power. Specifically, the GPIF will develop a coal gasification technology called PyGas(TM), a patented technology owned by CRS Sirrine Engineers, Inc., that is expected to advance the commercialization of low-cost integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) systems for utility applications. Such systems are anticipated to be among the technologies of choice of electric utilities in the next decade.
The technology will allow gas fuel to be derived from coal for use in generating electricity. Among the technology's benefits are clean environmental performance and high levels of power generating efficiency.
As the prime contractor, CRS Sirrine Engineers, in addition to providing the technology, is responsible for the design and construction of the facility and will also provide startup assistance. Construction is scheduled to begin in September 1993. The DOE contract includes an optional second phase for the design and construction of a $3.9 million advanced fluidized-bed hot fuel gas clean up system. This system would remove sulfur pollutants from the fuel gas prior to its combustion for power generation. Engineering will be provided by CRS Sirrine Engineers' Power Division in Greenville, S.C.
Based in Greenville, S.C., CRS Sirrine Engineers is a leading worldwide provider of power and industrial facility design and construction services.
CRSS, through its subsidiaries, is one of the largest design and construction services companies in the nation. CRSS is also a leader in the independent power and cogeneration industry, with its 81 percent ownership in CRSS Capital.
