CROWN CRAFTS ANNOUNCES FISCAL 1994 SECOND-QUARTER AND FIRST-HALF FINANCIAL RESULTS

CALHOUN, Ga., Oct. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Crown Crafts, Inc. (AMEX: CRW) today announced financial results for the second quarter and six months that ended Sept. 26.
For the second quarter of fiscal 1994, net sales advanced to a quarterly record of $47,014,000, up 15 percent from last year's $40,986,000. The increase was primarily due to significant growth in sales of jacquard-woven cotton throws. Net income increased 9 percent to $2,586,000 in fiscal 1994 from $2,369,000 in the same period a year ago. Earnings per share were $0.31 in the fiscal 1994 second quarter and $0.29 in the second quarter a year ago.
Michael H. Bernstein, Crown Crafts' president and chief executive officer, stated: "In the September quarter, we made tremendous strides toward the full utilization of our new manufacturing and warehousing facility in Roxboro, North Carolina. During the quarter, we installed, debugged and fully implemented the software systems which control the receipt, storage, retrieval and cutting of fabric. Late in the quarter, we installed the final module of our operating software, which will control warehousing, packing and shipping of finished product. This is the most complex part of the automation project, and, as planned, we will phase in utilization of this part of the system over several weeks. The speed of the final phase-in has met our expectations so far, and we are already shipping some customers' orders from the new warehouse. We believe we will fully debug the system, and be substantially completed with the phase-in of finished goods warehousing, by the end of the third quarter, allowing us to begin to see significant operational efficiencies.
"Business remains brisk," commented Bernstein, "as we continue to experience strong demand for our products. We are very excited about new design offerings we introduced at the October home textiles market. We unveiled our newest line of comforters and accessories, a collaborative effort with famous European apparel designer Emanuel Ungaro. This is Ungaro's first line of home furnishings products. Three patterns will be available in Royal Sateen 260, a 260-thread-count 100 percent long-staple combed Egyptian cotton fabric. We also introduced additional new styles in our Royal Sateen, Perry Ellis and Bob Timberlake collections. A new line of Colonial Williamsburg sheets and comforters was introduced to complement our exclusive and popular line of Colonial Williamsburg cotton throws and woven bedspreads."
For the first half of fiscal 1994, net sales increased 16 percent to $81,557,000 from last year's $70,560,000. First half net income showed a minimal increase to $3,736,000 from the $3,733,000 recorded in the same period a year ago. On a per-share basis, earnings were unchanged at $0.45.
