CROWN CORK ENDS GRIEVANCE WITH STEELWORKERS
BY AGREEING TO INCREASE PREMIUM PAY FOR OVERTIME
PITTSBURGH, May 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Crown Cork & Seal Co. has settled a grievance filed by the United Steelworkers of America (USW) by agreeing to increase premium pay for overtime for workers at its Milwaukee plant, the union announced today.
Leon Lynch, the USW International vice-president for human affairs, said the agreement calls for payment of 2.5 times the hourly rate for work in excess of 60 hours per week. It also provides more than $35,000 in back pay for the workers involved, who are members of USW Local 4454. Regular overtime will continue to be paid at the rate of time-and-one-half. Work on weekends, Saturday and Sunday as such, will be paid at the rate of double time the regular rate.
"Anyone required to work these numbers of hours should be compensated accordingly, and this agreement assures that our members will be," Lynch said in announcing settlement of the grievance. "Our larger goal is to convince the company of the need to hire sufficient numbers of workers to eliminate the need for excessive overtime. In the meantime, we will be examining overtime practices at other Crown Cork locations and insist on similar payment procedures there."
